MRes and PhD

We offer MRes and PhD in any area of global health, population and policy (see details of our expertise in “Who we are and what we do” section. Supervisors can be drawn from various faculties within the University of Portsmouth and the University of Brawijaya. Depending on the topic, candidates can select a multi-disciplinary supervisory team from the two universities. Since the PB Centre has campuses both in the UK and Indonesia, candidates will have the opportunity to spend part of their PhD period in Malang where they can have a supervisor and access to library and computing facilities. This will be an added advantage for students undertaking field work in South or South East Asia. Our current postgraduate students work on various population health topics in the UK, South Asia, South East Asia and Africa. MRes and PhD degrees will be awarded by the University of Portsmouth, and candidates have to fulfil the necessary course and dissertation requirements outlined in the University of Portsmouth website PhD pages here. We offer limited part/full bursaries which will be widely advertised including this site. All applicants need to complete an online application with a detailed research proposal and should have entry requirements as outlined in the PhD pages of the University of Portsmouth website. MA in Global Health Research Methods, Malang Campus, Indonesia (2017 intake)

A two year Masters course on Global Health Research Methods will be launched at the Portsmouth-Brawijaya Centre for Global Health, Population and Policy (PB Centre), Malang, Indonesia from September 2017. The course will be delivered by experienced lecturers from the University of Portsmouth and University of Brawijaya, with additional international guest lectures. The focus of the course will be on research methods and will cover: Impact evaluation; Randomised Control Trials, statistical modelling, health economics, implementation research, qualitative data analysis, substantive topics, and a dissertation. Students can spend their second year at PB Centre, University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom to undertake their dissertation project. The course will equip students with high-demand advanced research methodology skills to gain competitive jobs in: academic institutions, international organisations, development agencies, private sector and voluntary sector. The Portsmouth-Brawijaya Centre for Global Health, Population and Policy (PB Centre) is pleased to announce the launch of a four-day training course on mixed methods research at its Malang campus in Indonesia from March 6-9, 2017. The course is aimed to equip masters/PhDs, academics, government, and third sector researchers with the skills to undertake mixed methods research independently. The course will provide a solid foundation in using qualitative and quantitative software such as Nvivo and STATA for mixed methods research. The course will start with identification of research questions, selection of appropriate study designs, data collection, data analysis using both Nvivo (thematic analysis) and STATA (regression analysis), integration of findings to answer research questions, and preparation of research papers. Participants will either work with their own data, if they have this, or data provided by the course to actually undertake qualitative and quantitative data analysis to answer research questions they, either individually or in a team, set for their research. At the end of the course participants will have a research paper outline. The course will be delivered through lectures and practical sessions. Maximum uptake for the course will be 25 participants, and we offer 2 bursaries for participants (staff and students) from the University of Brawijaya and University of Portsmouth.

The deadline for applications is December 31, 2016 and participants will be notified of the outcome of their application by 15 January 2017. Fees should be paid within 30 days of acceptance of offer. As places are limited we encourage participants to apply early.
